I reckon there’s two ways to run an ultra, completing and competing. Depending on what you want from each event depends on how you go about things before and on race day.
Just completing an ultra is a massive task in itself and puts you head and shoulder above the general population (in my eyes) and you have to do whatever possible to get to the end.
When I started entering races and thinking about competing I had to take a few more risks, in training, in strategy and on race day. The rewards are huge, you lose some of the enjoyment on race day and the lows can be real low, but we can all aim for this if we want, it’s just about taking that gamble and finding out what you’re capable of. It scares the shit out of me every time.
